Sofia Vergara at the Smurfs Premiere

Sofia Vergara looked stunning as usual at the premiere of the Smurfs movie. Celebrity Makeup Artist, Kayleen McAdams (Rachel's sister) created her look using COVERGIRL products. McAdams said because Vergara wore a beautiful purple dress, she wanted to do a shimmery bronze eye to compliment the outfit. 


Here's what she did to create the look: 


SKIN:

On her face she used COVERGIRL NatureLuxe Silk Foundation in Chestnut, COVERGIRL TruConceal #4  and COVERGIRL Clean oil-control Pressed Power in Soft Honey to eliminate any shine.

To highlight her cheeks and give a touch of color, she used COVERGIRL TruBlend Minerals Bronzer in Natural Bronze andCOVERGIRL Cheekers Blush in Classic Pink

EYES: 
To get her shimmery bronze eye, she applied COVERGIRL Intense ShadowBlast in Brown Bling (she used this first on the lid with the shadow on top to give it staying power in this heat) followed by Queen Collection Eye Shadow in Fire it up all over the lid and along the bottom lash line and COVERIGIRL Queen Collection Eye Shadow in Copper Penny on the outer corners. She lined her eyes with COVERGIRL LiquilineBlast eyeliner in Black Fire and finished the eyes with multiple coats of COVERGIRL NatureLuxe Mousse Mascara in Very Black.

LIPS:
To create Sofia’s soft, shiny pink lip, she applied COVERGIRL LipPerfection lipliner in Splendid followed by COVERGIRL LipPerfection lipcolor in Entwined.

Beauty Q & A-Leaky Liners: My Smudge-Proof Product Picks

A reader recently asked me a great beauty question: 


Q: “Do you have any suggestions for keeping eyeliner on the bottom of your eye from smudging? Almost an hour after I've applied it I look like I have dark circles!”

This is an issue that plagues most gals who love to wear eyeliner (i.e. every female who wears makeup). I rarely walk out of the house without at least a swipe of black liner on. In order to look at all pulled-together, it's a must have. Inevitably, my liner travels to the corners of my eye giving me an unintentionally smudged droopy eye effect. It's gorgeous let me tell you.  

A: Your best bet for liners are the gel, liquid or cream options. Often, kohl pencils contain oils that make them smudgy so they glide on easily but just as easily slide off. Your skins natural oils also speed up the raccoon eye process. If it's an especially hot day out, your body is going to produce more oil and sweat that will literally sweat off whatever you have on your eyes. 

Before offering up my product suggestions, here are a few tips to keep your traveling liner at bay for at least a few hours.

Prep your skin

To add a barrier between your skin and your eye makeup, dab a primer followed by a concealer onto your lids and underneath your eyes. A primer will make your makeup last longer and smooth out your pores so makeup doesn't cake or crease. I love Smashbox's Photo Finish Foundation Primer, Urban Decay's Eyeshadow Primer Potion or COVERGIRL & OLAY's Simply Ageless Serum Primer. 

Get your canvas ready

Concealer adds another protectant and also covers up any discoloration or unevenness. Apply an under eye concealer and dust a loose/translucent powder over the concealer. This will keep the makeup in place. The primer, concealer and powder will keep the liner from traveling down because liner smudges when there is a lot of oil around the eye area. By concealing and powdering, the area is kept smooth and oil-free. Use a concealer that's a little tacky (as in a little sticky and not too creamy). A more textured concealer like Cover FX Conceal FX Camouflage Concealer ($27.00) will last longer and be more resistant to the heat and your own sweat. 

Product Recommendations

1) CoverGirl's LiquilineBlast liner ($8.99) looks like pencil but has a smooth gel consistency and a smudger on the end, so you can actually wing out a smoky eye if you want. I like the intensity of the color and the formula of the pencil which has the staying power of a liquid. Plus, at $8.99 this drugstore beauty buy is ATM approved.  

2) Make Up For Ever Aqua Eyes  ($18.00) was created by MUFE founder Dany Sanz for water ballet performers. It's an award winning liner with a creamy, gel consistency and a huge range of colors to choose from. Make Up For Ever is one of my absolute favorite brand's and a makeup artist's best friend. You can't go wrong with any of their products and their liners are no exception

3) Blinc Liquid Eyeliner ($24.00) was created after the tremendous success of the line's smudge-proof mascara. The famed-product formula "tubes" together and binds to your lashes, creating a polymer-like consistency that comes off with warm water. Like the mascara, Blinc liners forms a water-resistant "layer of color" that binds to the lash line and comes off with warm water using the same "tube technology". Customers complained the brush applicator was a bit tough to use, but the formula is without fail smudge-proof. 

4) Lancome ARTLINER Precision Point Eyeliner ($29.00) This famed liquid liner features a combination of two film-forming polymers that make the formula last all day. The tip is easy to use and the consistency is rich and intense. It's a customer and makeup artist favorite.

5) Make Up For Ever Aqua Black Waterproof Cream Liner ($22.00) This little puppy does not budge. It's my favorite liner right now and what I use every day. While it's not a liner you can apply on the go, when you do line your eyes in the morning you won't need to touch up for the rest of the day. The creamy formula comes in a pot with a protective cover because the less exposure it has to air the better and longer the consistency lasts. By keeping the lid on tight the liner keeps from drying out. It's the ultimate black eyeliner and gives you drama without looking Goth. LOVE IT.

Get Rashida Jones's look from the 2011 GLAAD Awards

The ever-adorable Rashida Jones and Amy Poehler hosted the 2011 GLAAD Media Awards recently. The awards show recognizes and honors media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the gay, bisexual and transgender community. Jones and Poehler make a statement by wearing black tuxedos by Hugo Boss. In contrast, Jones had a very feminine, chic makeup look for the night. I loved the entire look. The Parks and Recreation co-star kept the attention on her stunning tuxedo and beautiful face by pulling her hair back in a messy bun. 

Celebrity makeup Jo Strettell created her gorgeous look using COVERGIRL products. The look was surprisingly low key and definitely easy to recreate at home.

Lauren Conrad at US Weekly's Hot Hollywood Party

Lauren Conrad looked glamorous at US Weekly's Hot Hollywood Party. She changed up her usual cascading curls with a perfectly-coiffed top knot and pumped up the look with crimson lips. As a Style honoree for the event, Conrad took the opportunity to showcase an outfit from her own upcoming Paper Crown holiday collection.

Celebrity makeup artist Amy Nadine created her gorge look using COVERGIRL products. Here's what she did and what you can do to recreate the look at home: 

FACE

First Nadine applied NatureLuxe Silk Foundation in Sandstone all over her face and neck with a sponge.

Then she gave her a pretty flush with Simply Ageless Sculpting Blush in Plush Peach, first by warming it up between her fingers then swirling it on the apples of her cheeks.

EYES

Lauren is sporting her signature cat-eye winged liner using LineExact Liquid Liner in Very Black.  Starting in the inner corner it was lightly dragged across the lashline then upward and outward towards the end of her brow. Tip: the harder you press the tip, the thicker the line, so start with light pressure than gradually press harder as you travel across towards the outer corners.

Nadine followed with two coats of LashBlast Fusion Mascara in Very Black and tucked in a few individual lashes in the outer corners to complement the winged effect.

LIP

She finished with COVERGIRL LipPerfection in Tempt, a scarlet red color that she powdered for a matte look with translucent powder using an eyeshadow blending brush.

Video Makeup Tutorial-How To Use Your Favorite Eyeshadow Quads

Sofia Vergara at the Kids' Choice Awards

Sofia Vergara definitely knows how to wow on the red carpet, but even on an orange carpet she still knows how to stand out. At Nickelodeon's 24th Annual Kids' Choice Awards she looked her usual gorgeous self, albeit toned down from her typical awards show attire.

Celebrity Makeup Artist Leslie Lopez created her look. Lopez created a modern day take on Sophia Loren and Raquel Welch for a photo shoot earlier that day. Vergara and Lopez loved the look so much they decided to keep the look but tone it down a bit for the awards show. Here's what Lopez did to create her look:

EYES: Lopez wanted to create a sultry, smokey eye for Vergara. She used COVERGIRL Smoky ShadowBlast in Bronze Fire, the darker shade in the crease of the eye and blended out to accentuate the Modern Family star's almond-shape eyes. She then used the lighter shade on the center of the lid and in the inner corner of the eye. To intensify the look, she used COVERGIRL LiquilineBlast in Brown Blaze and blended up onto the lid. Lopez finished her eyes with multiple coats of COVERGIRL LashBlast Volume Mascara concentrating on the ends of Vergara's lashes to draw them out.

SKIN: She applied a small amount of  COVERGIRL NatureLuxe Silk Foundation to the cheeks, nose and forehead and then lightly blended it all over her face to even out her skin. Next, she added COVERGIRL Simply Ageless Sculpting Blush in Lush Berry to the apples of her cheeks for a natural glow.

LIPS: On her lips, Lopez used COVERGIRL LipPerfection lipcolor in Rush for a brown/nude shade that complemented the look perfectly.

Selena Gomez at the Kids' Choice Awards

 

Selena Gomez looked fresh-faced, young, and natural at the Kids' Choice Awards. Celebrity Makeup Artist Karan Mitchell created her fun, casual look. Her Christian Cota outfit screamed Spring and Mitchell wanted to stay with soft, watercolor shades for her makeup.

Mitchell used COVERGIRL products to create the luminescent look. Here's what she did:

EYES: Mitchell blended COVERGIRL CG Smoothers Concealer in medium on her eyelid with a soft sponge as a base for her shadow. She then applied the COVERGIRL Eye Enhancers 1-kit in Pink Chiffon all over the lid and Knockout Pink as a soft liner underneath the eye and in the inside corners for a soft sparkle. She then applied COVERGIRL Eye Enhancers 1-kit in Brown Smolder to the crease, slightly extending the outside corners. Mitchell finished the eye with COVERGIRL LiquilineBlast in Black Fire on the top as well as the outside edge of the bottom lashes. She then applied a few individual lashes and used two coats of the LashBlast Luxe Mascara in Black Platinum. 

SKIN: Mitchell applied COVERGIRL NatureLuxe Silk Foundation in Nutmeg and loves it because it's lightweight and gives good coverage. For concealer under the eyes she used the COVERGIRL CG Smoothers Concealer in Medium. To set the look she used COVERGIRL TRUblend pressed powder in Translucent Honey with a soft brush. She then applied COVERGIRL Cheekers Blush in Plumberry Glow to the apples of her cheeks. 

LIPS: Mitchell applied COVERGIRL LipPerfection lipliner in Splendid and then diffused the line with a lip brush. She finished the look with COVERGIRL LipPerfection lipcolor in Dazzle and COVERGIRL ShineBlast Lipgloss in Radiant.

Get Sofia Vergara's bombshell look (sans the body) from the 2011 SAG Awards.

Makeup artist Kayleen McAdams (Rachel's sister) created a Brigitte Bardot inspired look with lots of lashes and a glam. smokey eye to complement the Modern Family star's knockout royal blue Roberto Cavalli gown.

To recreate:

Face-Dot a touch of concealer under the eyes and then apply COVERGIRL NatureLuxe Silk Foundation in Chestnut followed by COVERGIRL Clean Pressed Powder Oil Control in Soft Honey. Add a touch of highlighter on the cheekbones, forehead and the bridge of nose for a healthy glow and finish the skin with COVERGIRL Cheekers Blush in Classic pink applied on the cheeks.

Eyes-For a smoky eye line the top of the eyes with COVERGIRL LiquiLineBlast in Brown Blaze very close to the lash line and the bottom of the eye from the inner to outer corner. Make the line on the top very thick and smoky and then blend it out to a cat-eye shape. Apply COVERGIRL Eye Enhancers in Coffee Shop over the liner to soften it and bring that color all the way up to the crease of the eye. Next add a thin line of COVERGIRL Line Exact in Black Brown right at the lash line to add thickness to the lashes and finish the eye with lots of lashes; 3 coats of COVERGIRL LashBlast Fusion in very Black on the top and one on the bottom.

Lips-To create a mauve lip use COVERGIRL Lip Perfection Lipstick in Entwined for rich color with a creamy finish.

COVERGIRL's 50th Anniversary Party-Beauty Breakdown

Happy 50^th Anniversary to one of my favorite brands COVERGIRL! Last week the makeup powerhouse celebrate their half-century in the beauty biz with a star-studded red carpet bash in LA. All 5 of their COVERGIRL's came out for the event following the People's Choice Awards (Ellen Degeneres, Taylor Swift, Drew Barrymore, Queen Latifah and Dania Ramirez). Of course all the ladies looked gorgeous and very camera-ready. I got the skinny straight from their celebrity makeup artists on what they did to get them looking glam.

Queen Latifah  - by Celebrity Makeup Artist D'Andre Michael

Queen Latifah's wardrobe for the show (she was hosting the People's Choice Awards) varied between Black, Hot Pink and Turquoise Blue so I wanted to give here a look that accentuated the eyes.

SKIN: I started by using COVERGIRL Queen Collection Natural Hue Compact Foundation in Golden Honey and set it with COVEGIRL Queen Collection Natural Hue Minerals Pressed Powder in Brown Bronze 1. I accentuated Queen's cheeks with a light powder blush to add a hint of color and tone.  To complete Queen's overall look I brushed COVERGIRL Queen Collection Natural Hue Bronzer in Brown Bronze for a soft and subtle glow.

EYES:  I started by applying COVERGIRL Smoky ShadowBlast in Onyx Smoke (black color) on eyelid and under the lower lash.  Doing this allows you to blend your darker shadows into a softer color.  I then used COVERGIRL Queen Collection 1-Kit Eyeshadow in Black Tie over the Onyx Smoke and blended it above the crease of the lid.  I did this to intensify the color and set the Smoky ShadowBlast. I lined the inner bottom eyelid for depth with COVERGIRL LiquiLineBlast in Black Fire.  To finish the eyes I applied 2 coats of COVERGIRL LashBlast Volume Waterproof Mascara in Very Black.

LIPS: For Queen's lips, I offset the smokey eye with a lavender lip gloss. Try COVERGIRL ShineBlast in Dazzle. By doing lighter colored lips, this allows her eyes would stand out.

Taylor Swift- by Celebrity Makeup Artist Lorrie Turk

We decided to go for a fresh, pretty beauty look. She opted for a slight departure from her signature bright red lip for more of an orangy-red, which added a pop of color to complement the light color of the dress.

SKIN: I prepped her face with COVERGIRL Simply Ageless Serum Primer and applied COVERGIRL NatureLuxe Silk Foundation in Alabaster with a brush and blended with a sponge. You can also apply the foundation by mixing it in your palm and applying directly with your fingers. The foundation gave Taylor a luxurious polished skin finish.

EYES: On her eyes, I used COVERGIRL LiquiLineBlast in Black Fire to create the minimal winged liner. We didn't want to make the eyes too dramatic since we were focusing on a bright lip. I finished the eyes by curling her lashes and applying COVERGIRL LashBlast Volume in Black.

LIPS: Taylor's lips were the standout of the look. I first used COVERGIRL Lip Perfection Lip Liner in Passion to line her lips and also help the color stay through the night. I then finished the lip by applying COVERGIRL Lip Perfection Lipstick in Flame.

Drew Barrymore- by Celebrity Makeup Artist Debra Ferullo

Inspiration: It all started obviously with her dress. It was a gorgeous orange color that reminded us of the French Riviera so I wanted to create a fresh, dewy look.

SKIN: On Drew's skin I created a luxurious polished finish with COVERGIRL NatureLuxe Silk Foundation and then warmed up her cheeks by applying COVERGIRL Simply Ageless Sculpting Blush in Lush Berry for a natural sun-kissed glow.

EYES: For her eyes, we wanted to create some depth, but nothing too strong, so I created a wash of bronzes and plums using COVERGIRL Smoky ShadowBlast in Bronze Fire all the way up to the browbone and under the eye and COVERGIRL Smoky ShadowBlast in Purple Plume. I then lined her eyes with COVERGIRL LiquiLineBlast in Brown Blaze and smudged it with my finger to create depth but without harsh lines. I finished the eyes with 2 coats of COVERGIRL LashBlast Volume Mascara.

LIPS: Lastly I applied COVERGIRL NatureLuxe Gloss Balm in Anemone on her lips to complete the fresh look.

Ellen Degeneres- by Celebrity Makeup Artist Heather Currie

I wanted Ellen to have a classic, clean, and beautiful look. At the same time, because she has such vibrant eyes, I wanted to do something sexy and smoky to add a little glamour.

SKIN: I began the process by prepping her skin with COVERGIRL Simply Ageless Serum Primer. I like to use the primer because it hydrates the skin and helps the foundation to last longer. Next I used the COVERGIRL Simply Ageless Foundation. Ellen tan right now so I used the foundation in Warm Beige, but normally use Buff Beige. I like to use the sponge that comes with the foundation, and I prefer to use it wet. Just make sure that all of the excess water is squeezed out of the sponge. After the foundation I applied the Simply Ageless Concealer in light/medium. I basically put a little concealer under her eyes, and a tiny bit in the T-zone area to reduce any redness. To make Ellen's skin glow I added some of the COVERGIRL Simply Ageless Sculpting Blush in Royal Plum to the apples of her cheeks. I then used COVERGIRL Clean Pressed Powder for Normal Skin in Natural Beige, over her skin. Because I wanted her skin to appear natural, I focused the powder more in the T-zone area. We want the shine to appear more on the cheekbones and on the sides of her face.

EYES: For Ellen's eyes, I started by lining the eye with COVERGIRL LiquiLineBlast in Brown Blaze. I then used an eye shadow brush and continued to smudge the liner area with COVERGIRL Eye Enhancers in Brown Smolder. I wanted Ellen's look to seem more edgy so I added some of the COVERGIRL Smoky ShadowBlast in Silver Sky on top of the shadow. Adding the metallic cream gave the eye a bit more dimension and a bit of glamorous sheen. I then added  COVERGIRL Line Exact in Brown. The last step for the eyes was to curl her lashes and I applied two coats of the COVERGIRL LashBlast Volume Mascara.

LIPS: I wanted to keep the lips more natural. I used COVERGIRL Lip Perfection Lip Liner in Seduce, but I didn't line the lip with it, I lightly applied the pencil to most of the lip area. I like to do that because it holds the gloss and lip color longer, and gives it a primer affect. Then I applied COVERGIRL NatureLuxe Gloss Balm in Clove to add a light luxurious sheer color and finish the look.

Dania Ramirez- by Celebrity Makeup Artist Matthew VanLeeuwen

Dania's makeup inspiration was a twist on a classic beauty look. She called me earlier that day to tell me she she wanted a red lip, which I totally agreed with once I saw her outfit.  We stuck with a fairly clean, pale lid and sculpted brows.

SKIN: To start, I prepped the skin with a light moisturizer and  then applied  COVERGIRL Simply Ageless Serum Primer. I then used COVERGIRL NatureLuxe Foundation in Nutmeg which gave her perfectly polished skin with a luxurious finish. Lastly, I applied COVERGIRL Simply Ageless Blush in Plush Peach on the apples of her cheeks to balance out the look. It is really important to create a natural looking balance on the skin especially when working with a bright red lip.  I finished it off by setting her face with a light dusting of COVERGIRL Clean Pressed Powder in Tawny.

EYES: On her eyes, I applied COVERGIRL Smoky ShadowBlast in Citrus Flair, using the green color on the lid and the bronze color in the crease and then darkened the outside of the eye with COVERGIRL Smoky ShadowBlast in Bronze Fire. I created a minimal line to define the eye with COVERGIRL LiquiLineBlast in Black Fire and finished with a few coats of COVERGIRL LashBlast Length Mascara in Black.

LIPS: On her lips, I created a strong, glamorous red lip with COVERGIRL Lip Perfection Lipstick in Hot.

COVERGIRL's Latest & (I think) Greatest

COVERGIRL's shiny new cosmetics (used on Maggie Gyllenhaal at the "Nanny McPhee Returns" premiere) got me sufficiently intrigued so I had to test them out myself. They've had a slew of praise-worthy products come out in the last few months including their Simply Ageless Foundation (a CEW Beauty Awards Winner) and Smoky ShadowBlast double-sided Eyeshadow stick (also a CEW Beauty Winner), so I was already impressed with their offerings.

I'm always looking for beauty basics such as primers, lip colors and eye enhancers and I certainly found them in their latest collection. I tested out their COVERGIRL & Olay Simply Ageless Serum-Primer and loved how lightweight it felt on my skin. I  was also impressed by how non-clogged my pored felt after use. I'm always looking for a great lip stain (so much less up-keep than a gloss or stick) and always looking for a great eyeliner pencil and I'm pretty sure COVERGIRL knocked it out of the park (I've been living in Boston for way too long) with these products. I am OBSESSED with their LiquiLineBlast pencils. They go on super smooth (almost gel-like) but don't end up ringing around your eyes at the end of the day. The smudger on the other end of the pencil gives an incredibly firm and precise point and the shades are incredibly versatile. The pigments are rich and extremely blendable. The consistency reminds me of a liquid liner but the pencil makes applications easy. Only complain I've heard from online reviews has been about finding a sharpener that works effectively once the pencil goes blunt. I'm also loving their Outlast Lipstains. I had tried a few in the past and could never really find the right shade. Ironically, I found it when I tried the same shade Ms. Gyllenhaal was sporting: 450 Saucy Plum. Talk about versatile! The cherry-plum stain is rich but not overpowering and brings out a great natural-looking flush with the contrast in color to my skin tone. I love this shade!

Get the look: Maggie Gyllenhaal at the "Nanny McPhee Returns" Premiere

Maggie Gyllenhaal looked retro sweet at the premiere of her new movie "Nanny McPhee Returns" starring Emma Thompson. COVERGIRL makeup artist created her 1920's-1930's inspired look. Stern says she wanted to combine a smoky eye with an added electric element and a deeply stained lip.

 Here's what Stern did to create Gyllenhaal's standout red carpet look:

SKIN: "I started by prepping the skin with Lavender [Hydrating] Mist by Jurlique and moisturized with SK11 Facial Lift Emulsion. Next, I primed her skin with COVERGIRL & Olay Simply Ageless Serum-Primer and sparingly used Chantecaille Future Skin Foundation", Stern says. She then blushed the cheek with Chantecaille Aqua Blush in "Daring" with a powder blush overtop. Finally, to set the look, Sterns says, "I used La Mer Treatment Powder Foundation just in the t-zone".

EYES: Stern gave the actress an updated smokey eye using purple shades which brought out the star's gorgeous baby blue eyes. To create the sultry stare Stern says she "smoked the eye out with Shu Uemura IR Purple 795 Pressed Eyeshadow".  The celebrity makeup guru then lined the top lash line with Shiseido Automatic Fine Eyeliner in brown and smudged out the bottom lash line with COVERGIRL LiquiLineBlast Eye liner in "Violet Voltage". To add even more drama she swiped two coats of COVERGIRL LashBlast Fusion Mascara in Brown onto her lashes with a little black mascara on the ends.

LIP: Stern gave her already defined lips a deep pout using the new shade of COVERGIRL Outlast Lipstain in Saucy Plum

 
 

2010 Teen Choice Awards Beauty-Leighton Meester

Leighton Meester strutted her stuff on the green carpet at yesterday's Teen Choice Awards (airing tonight). COVERGIRL Makeup Artist, Molly R. Stern, gave the Gossip Girl star a fresh and ethereal beauty look that perfectly complimented her feminine weather-appropriate Emilio Pucci mini-dress.  

The makeup artist gave me the low-down on how she created the actress/singer's glowing face.

Face: Stern prepped Leighton's skin with Josie Marin Argan Oil Skin Primer and lightly moisturized with Sk-11 Facial Lift Emulsion. She then used a minimal amount of COVERGIRL Clean Liquid Makeup. Finally,  she swept on Kevyn Aucoin Creamy Moist Glow in Nuelle and dusted YSL Touché Blush over the top.

Luxury treatment? To set Meester's look for the red carpet Stern dusted all over with the super luxe La Mer The Treatment Powder Foundation in Linen.

Eyes: Stern wanted to created a celestial glow with a bit of a rock and roll edge. She first put a base on her eye with NARS Cream Shadow in Corfu on the lid and then added Shu Uemura 'P Gold 94' over the top. She added a little silver sparkly glittery shadow from RMK, (from Japan), to the inside of the lid and under the outer edge of the eye. She then lined the top of the lid at the lash line and under the eye with COVERGIRL LiquiLineBlast Eyeliner in Blue Boom. For her lashes she added two coats of COVERGIRL LashBlast Fusion in Brown.

Lips: Her pout was kept simple. Stern wanted a long lasting nude so she chose COVERGIRL Oulast Lipstain in Nude Kiss on the lip with COVERGIRL ShineBlast Lipgloss in Dazzle over top.
